Italy: construction work threatens untouched Alpine wilderness
Bad news for the jewel of the Alps
The President of the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Mr. Riccardo Illy, has given the go ahead to damaging and out-dated river works which will devastate one of the most beautiful and natural areas of the Tagliamento river.
The Tagliamento river, located in north-east Italy, is one of the last rivers in the Alps to have escaped massive regulation schemes.
But now the river's future is at risk if Italy goes ahead with plans to alter the Tagliamento's water flow in one its most beautiful and natural areas. The regional government's planned flood protection works will destroy one of the largest intact floodplains in central Europe - home to polecats, red foxes, badgers and a wealth of birds, including ospreys, harriers and shrikes.
The future of this wild river is now at risk. We are assessing our next steps, and will do all we can to stop the massive construction work.
We'll let you know if your help is needed again.
Many thanks to those of you who took action, close to 4500 messages were sent to Mr. Illy urging him to reject the infrastructures already planned and to pursue sustainable alternatives.
